Adult Eye Exam

Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining overall health. These exams help prevent eye problems and catch any issues early on, even before you notice any symptoms. Routine eye exams can also uncover other health issues that aren’t eye-related.

At Valley Eye Care Associates in Fort Kent, Maine, our eye doctors Dr. Tim Rioux and Dr. Brent Stoliker examine patients of all ages, including children and teenagers.

What do eye exams include?

During your eye exam, our optometrist will perform a series of tests to evaluate your eye health and vision. Your eye exam may include the following:

  • A comprehensive vision exam
  • Education on how to maintain healthy vision
  • Screening for eye diseases or conditions without symptoms
  • Refractive tests to determine if prescription lenses are needed
  • Creating a treatment plan to treat eye diseases or conditions
  • Determining if specialized care is needed

How long does an eye eye exam take?

Eye exams typically take between 30–45 minutes. Before the exam, our eye doctor or another team member will ask about your medical and vision care history. Following the exam, we will go over the test results with you and recommend any necessary follow-up care or treatment. Treatment options may include prescription glasses or contact lenses, eye drops, or in-office procedures.

Why are eye exams important?

Regular eye exams are essential for detecting eye diseases early. Eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration can develop silently without any symptoms in their early stages. By getting regular eye exams, your eye doctor can identify issues early when treatment is most effective. Regular eye exams can also reveal signs of other health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and some cancers.

How often should you get an eye exam?

Most adults and school-aged children should get an eye exam every two years. If you wear glasses or contacts, have a family history of eye diseases, are over 60 years old, or have health conditions like diabetes or hypertension, you may need more frequent eye exams.
